Is Herman Cain the GOP's Newest Front-Runner? (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | I'd have never believed it if I didn't read the story myself. Reuters reported Cain, a former Godfather's Pizza executive, won the Florida GOP Straw Poll, slicing the front-runner status from Texas Gov. Rick Perry and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney in a "must win" state.

Cain definitely has some good ideas, and Washington could use some good ol' common business sense at times, but he lacks the muster to pull off a national campaign against such a crowded field of candidates. If Cain can continue his momentum -- something I think unlikely -- he might build a stronger political organization and raise enough money to continue his campaign. However, if as I suspect this is a one-time message from frustrated Florida voters, then Cain's win is nothing more than a fleeting moment in the race for the GOP nomination.

"This is a sign of our growing momentum and my candidacy that cannot be ignored," Cain told reporters after his victory.

I'm sure it is. Any momentum away from idle is progress. Our political system gives the underdog candidate equally footing -- for the most part. Well, that's true only until the big money kicks in and propels the stronger candidates to the front of the race. Cain will need to draw in major financial supporters just to compete with the other GOP candidates and, if he wins, draw even more to go toe-to-toe with President Barack Obama's mammoth finance machine.

On the surface, Cain is an impressive candidate. Educated. Experienced. Solid background of achievement. Personable.

What he lacks is the experience to negotiate the political reality of Washington. That inexperience would severely limit his ability to muscle a political agenda through a divided Congress.

Or would it?

Maybe what the country needs is someone who can change the tone in Washington. Maybe we just need someone who brings Americans hope for a better tomorrow. Maybe it's as simple as electing a president who can talk clearly and communicate well. Maybe that's all the change we need.

No, we tried that already. Cain has to be bigger and better than just a message about doing things differently. Cain cannot be Obama2.

With a Florida victory to claim, he joins the ranks of Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., as a one-time straw poll winner. Repeating it is the challenge.
