Buying sunglasses is polarized necessary?
Im planning on buying some good durable sunglasses. I usually buy cheap 2 for $20 at the mall but Ive broke and gone through so many pairs. Ive looked at Sunglasses Hut and found brands like Oakley, Revo, and Ray band. For me $150+ is to expansive and the name brands that are polarized were even more expensive like $250. So I checked one sporting goods store and found reasonable Under Armour from $79-130 with life time warranty. Everyone was trying to sell me the polarized lenses are they a must? Do they really prevent glare? Do they help the eyes? What really is Polarized? thanks
1. Polarization does not protect you from UV. It cuts glare. that?s it. UV protection is a function of the lens material. Polarization is a filter that blocks out light coming from a certain direction. Thus it is able to block glare.
#2. All Polarization is not created the same. REvo, Ray Ban, and most other manufacturers produce polarized lenses by sandwiching a polarization film in between two lenses. This causes some minor distortion. Oakley is one of the only manufacturers that actually does not do the sandwich method. The polarization is integrated into the lens itself.
#3. POlarization is not worth it unless you are in high glare situation like, Water Sports, fishing, baseball, driving (cuts reflections for oncoming windscreens, etc.). Many private pilots prefer NON-Polarized lenses b/e their instruments are already polarized (double polarization blocks what you are trying to see) and b/e they want to see the glint of sunlight off of the windshields of other planes).
#4. Try on the polarized glasses first. There is a very small portion of the population that cannot wear polarized lenses. It will give them a headache. before you spend the $$$ on polarized sunglasses, make sure you?re not part of this sliver of the population.
