We had lots of fun today taking Donovan to see Kung Fu Panda 2. After hitting a couple of Memorial Day sales, we headed to the theater. Donovan sat on Daddy?s lap and got to try popcorn for the first time. He appears to be as big a popcorn fiend as his dad! He didn?t even want the Red Vines I offered him?only the popcorn. He also thoroughly enjoyed the previews, utterly transfixed by the giant screen, blindly groping for more popcorn every few seconds until I put a piece into his hand. He couldn?t be bothered to look away from the screen to find it!
But, once the theater went totally dark, Donovan zonked out, and Tristan and I settled in for the movie. We both really liked the first Kung Fu Panda. Jack Black does a great job as the voice of Po, balancing the character between lovable and obnoxious. And the supporting cast, including Jackie Chan, Angelina Jolie, and Seth Rogen, among others, offer an amusing range of characters and tongue-in-cheek Kung Fu styles. The first movie was quirky and fun, with a nice message thrown in about believing in yourself.
The sequel turned out to be enjoyable but not nearly as funny as the first. And it had a much darker, and more sad, sub plot. The quick witted fire seemed to be missing from Black?s one-liners, and while the ?Furious Five? got in some amusing quips, the overall feel of the film was much more subdued, despite some very entertaining fight scenes with the evil peacock, Shen, voiced very effectively by Gary Oldman.
In the end, I?m glad we saw it. It was a great day to spend together as a family, and we had a lot of fun watching Donovan enjoy his popcorn and really pay attention to the beginning of the film. But, the movie itself could probably have waited for DVD. It just wasn?t as much fun as the first. If they make a third, which is likely considering that the sequel did fairly well in its opening weekend, I hope they can recapture the more lighthearted tone of the first film.
