Rebel attack injures 9 police in Indian Kashmir (AP)

SRINAGAR, India ? Officials say rebels fighting Indian rule in Kashmir detonated a bomb outside a police station, injuring nine officers.

Local police chief Altaf Khan says the rebels first exploded grenades outside the police station in Sopore town on Wednesday and then detonated a bomb as the policemen came outside. Four of the officers were injured seriously.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

The rebels reject Indian sovereignty over Muslim-majority Kashmir and want independence or a merger with Pakistan, which controls another part of the Himalayan region.

The conflict has killed more than 68,000 people since 1989.
