What we learned Thursday night

Five preseason games are in the books. ?We have 61 left to go until the real fun starts.

For those of you that missed the action last night, let?s look back at some takeaways from each game:

Patriots 47, Jaguars 12

1. Jaguars rookie quarterback Blaine Gabbert?s debut wasn?t terrible, but David Garrard shouldn?t be too worried about his starting gig yet.

2. The Patriots backup quarterbacks Brian Hoyer and Ryan Mallett both looked great. ?It wouldn?t shock us to see one of them dealt sometime in the next year or so.

3. Patriots rookie running back Stevan Ridley showed a surprising mix of power, speed, and receiving skills. ?He may work himself into the backfield mix sooner than expected.

Eagles 13, Ravens 6

1. Michael Vick picked up right where he left off.

2. Vince Young tried to quiet talk that he could lose the backup quarterback job to Mike Kafka.

3. The Ravens? offensive tackles struggled, which is the last thing they need.

4. Baltimore has to be concerned with rookie Tyrod Taylor?s status as the team?s backup quarterback. He helped put up 3 points in three quarters of action.

Seahawks 24, Chargers 17

1. An injury to tackle Russell Okung was not how the Seahawks wanted to start the preseason.

2. New Seahawks quarterback Tarvaris Jackson has some work to do. Five pass attempts, 15 yards, two sacks, and two scrambles.

3. Chargers running back Ryan Mathews was healthy enough to play, which is a step in the right direction.

Cowboys 24, Broncos 23

1. Kyle Orton went 74 yards in his only drive, but it stalled inside the five-yard line because of overly cute playcalling. It?s like Josh McDaniels never left!

2. Tim Tebow bounced back from a rough training camp to have a solid preseason opener. He has a long way to catch Orton.

3. Camp sensation Cowboys running back Lonyae Miller couldn?t back up his practice performance. Nine carries, 11 yards.

4. Tony Romo threw his first pass to fullback Chris Gronkowski, the guy who missed a block to cause Romo?s broken collarbone last year.

Cardinals 24, Raiders 18

1. Kevin Kolb was steady in his Cardinals debut.

2. Sebastian Janikowski and other strong-legged kickers are going to have fun with this new kickoff rule.

3. Raiders rookie receiver Denarius Moore built on a strong camp with a nice preseason opener. Oakland lost receiver Chaz Schilens and safety Hiram Eugene to injuries. ?It?s uncertain how serious the injuries were.
