WikiLeaks' Assange blames U.S. right for funding block

LONDON/BRUSSELS (Reuters) - WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange accused "hard-right" U.S. politicians on Tuesday of pressing European credit card firms to block more than $50 million of donations to the website that published thousands of secret U.S. diplomatic cables.

Assange, speaking to reporters at the Ecuadorean embassy in London where he took refuge in June to avoid extradition to Sweden, said the credit card companies' action had forced WikiLeaks to reduce the volume of documents it posted online.

Assange lamented a preliminary ruling by the European Commission on Tuesday that it was unlikely Visa Europe, MasterCard Europe and American Express Co had violated EU anti-trust rules with their blocks on processing WikiLeaks donations.

Assange said MasterCard had acknowledged in filings with the European Commission it had spoken to the staffs of Joseph Lieberman, an independent U.S. senator who chairs the Senate Homeland Security Committee, and Republican Representative Peter King, who chairs the House Homeland Security Committee.

This was evidence, Assange said, that "hard-right U.S. politicians were directly behind the extrajudicial banking blockade against WikiLeaks".

He said the action had blocked 95 percent of WikiLeaks' donations from Europe and cost it at least $50 million.

Lieberman and King were not immediately reachable for comment.

"DIFFICULT" STAY

Assange jumped bail in June after exhausting appeals in British courts against extradition to Sweden, where he is wanted for questioning over allegations of rape and sexual assault against two women.

Speaking in the embassy's gilt-corniced conference room, Assange said his stay there had been "difficult in many ways" but he had been able to continue his work.

Any resolution of the standoff would be "a matter of diplomacy", he told the press conference.

Assange, 41, showed no outward sign of the health problems that Ecuadorean officials say have plagued him.

He refused to comment on his health or how long he expects to stay in the embassy, declaring those subjects "off-topic".

Wearing a dark suit and white shirt with embroidery around the collar, Assange showed a video montage of U.S. politicians and commentators decrying him as a "high-tech terrorist" and "criminal".

DataCell, a company that collected donations for WikiLeaks, complained to the European Commission after Visa Europe, MasterCard Europe and American Express stopped processing donations for WikiLeaks in December 2010. Their decisions followed criticism by the United States of WikiLeaks' release of thousands of sensitive U.S. diplomatic cables.

"On the basis of the information available, the Commission considers that the complaint does not merit further investigation because it is unlikely that any infringement of EU competition rules could be established," said a spokesman for the Commission, the EU's executive.

The Commission would look at new information from DataCell before taking a final decision, he added.

Neural interaction in silence: Neurophysiologists study widespread networks of neurons responsible for memory

ScienceDaily (Nov. 19, 2012) ? While in deep dreamless sleep, our hippocampus sends messages to our cortex and changes its plasticity, possibly transferring recently acquired knowledge to long-term memory. But how exactly is this done? Scientists from the Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics have now developed a novel multimodal methodology called "neural event-triggered functional magnetic resonance imaging" (NET-fMRI) and presented the very first results obtained using it in experiments with both anesthetized and awake, behaving monkeys.

The new methodology uses multiple-contact electrodes in combination with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) of the entire brain to map widespread networks of neurons that are activated by local, structure-specific neural events.

Many invasive studies in nonhuman primates and clinical investigations in human patients have demonstrated that the hippocampus, one of the oldest, most primitive brain structures, is largely responsible for the long term retention of information regarding places, specific events, and their contexts, that is, for the retention of so-called declarative memories. Without the hippocampus a person may be able to learn a manual task over a period of days, say, playing a simple instrument, but -- remarkably -- such a skill is acquired in the absence of any memory of having practiced the task before.

The consolidation of declarative memory is thought to occur in two subsequent steps. During the first step, the encoding phase, hippocampus rapidly binds neocortical representations to local memory traces, while during subsequent "off-line" periods of calmness or sleep the new traces are concurrently reactivated in both hippocampus and cortex to strengthen the cortico-cortical connections underlying learned representations. But what is the neural basis of this hippocampal-cortical dialog, and how does hippocampus communicate with the rest of the brain?

For the very first time, Nikos Logothetis, director of the Department for Physiology of Cognitive Processes at the Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics and his team used so-called neural event triggered functional magnetic resonance imaging (NET-fMRI) in both anesthetized and awake, behaving monkeys to characterize the brain areas that consistently increased or decreased their activity in relationship to a certain type of fast hippocampal oscillations known as ripples. Ripples occur primarily during deep sleep and can be measured with electrophysiological methods. Using intracranial recordings of field potentials, the scientists demonstrated that the short periods of aperiodic, recurrent ripples are closely associated with reproducible cortical activations that occur concurrently with extensive activity suppression in other brain structures.

Interestingly, structures were suppressed whose activities could, in principle, interfere with the hippocampal-cortical dialog. The suppression of activity in the thalamus, for instance, reduces signals related to sensory processing, while the suppression of the basal ganglia, the pontine region and the cerebellar cortex may reduce signals related to other memory systems, such as that underlying procedural learning, for example riding a bicycle.

The aforementioned findings offer revealing insights into the large-scale organization of memory, a cognitive capacity emerging from the activation of widespread neural networks which were impossible to study in depth before now using either functional imaging alone or traditional single neuron recordings. Capacities such as perception, attention, learning and memory are actually best investigated using multimodal methodologies such as the NET-fMRI method employed in the MPI study. It is difficult to overstate the importance of the study of the neural mechanisms underlying such capacities, as the vast majority of neurological failures actually reflect dysfunctions of large-scale networks, including cortical and subcortical structures.

Study Explores Possible Tie Between Fever, Flu in ... - Health.com

pregnant 18213 Study Explores Possible Tie Between Fever, Flu in Pregnancy and Autism
By Amanda Gardner
HealthDay Reporter

MONDAY, Nov. 12 (HealthDay News) ? Children of mothers who contract the flu or have a prolonged fever while pregnant may have a very slight increased risk of developing autism spectrum disorder, a new study suggests.

However, women who have had lasting fever or the flu during pregnancy should not be overly concerned by these results, as the risk seen was extremely small.

Mild infections were not associated with an increased risk of autism, Danish researchers found. Antibiotic use was associated only with a very low, speculative risk, according to the study published online Nov. 12 and in the December print issue of Pediatrics.

?[This] study is purely explorative and it is far too soon to suggest any clinical implications,? said study lead author Dr. Hjordis Osk Atladottir, of the Institute of Epidemiology and Social Medicine at University of Aarhus.

?Indeed,? she added, ?the study shows that around 99 percent of women experiencing influenza, fever or taking antibiotics during pregnancy do not have children with autism.?

Having an infection triggers the body?s immune system, setting off a reaction intended to thwart the danger.

This is good when it comes to defending the body, but studies have suggested that activation of the mother?s immune system may harm a fetus?s neurodevelopment.

No one knows exactly why this may be the case but, Atladottir said, ?previous studies suggest that the activation of the maternal immune system affects the levels of certain cytokines in the maternal blood.?

Cytokines are message-carrying cells of the immune system. Some cytokines can cross the placental barrier and, here, may be ?able to alter the release of neurotransmitters and thus affect fetal brain development,? Atladottir said. She emphasized that this idea is purely speculative.

Another autism expert discussed the possibility that infection in pregnancy could somehow affect an infant?s brain development.

Animal studies ?suggest that maternal immune infection produces long-lasting changes in the brain, including those seen in individuals on the autism spectrum,? said Alycia Halladay, senior director of environmental and clinical sciences at Autism Speaks. ?Research suggests specific chemicals, called cytokines, may mediate this effect.?

One in 88 children in the United States has an autism spectrum disorder, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This is an umbrella term for developmental disorders that can range from mild to severe and that often affect social and communication skills. Little is known about what causes autism or precisely why rates seem to be increasing.

For this study, researchers asked mothers of almost 100,000 children born in Denmark between 1997 and 2003 about their history of infection, influenza and antibiotic use during pregnancy.

Children of mothers who reported having the flu while pregnant were twice as likely to develop autism. Having a fever for a week or more was associated with triple the risk.

Common urinary, respiratory and genital infections were not linked with an increased risk, the investigators noted.

Antibiotic use was associated with an almost-dismissible increased risk, although the authors noted that some drugs in this class may affect the function of folic acid, which is essential for fetal neurodevelopment.

But as the authors themselves noted, the study did have a number of limitations, including the fact that the women themselves reported whether or not they had been sick during pregnancy, a potentially unreliable measure.

There?s also a possibility that pure chance played a role in the findings, Atladottir said.

?We made over a hundred statistical tests,? she said. ?The mathematical rule is that around 5 percent of the tests are statistically significant by pure chance. Our few statistically significant findings could thus be the result of coincidence,? Atladottir pointed out.

?Thus, we must say that our study is speculative and we have to study this topic further before concluding anything,? she said.

U.S. expert Halladay had advice for mothers-to-be.

?Pregnant women should follow the direction of their doctor or health care provider to maintain a healthy pregnancy,? Halladay said. ?This includes avoiding illness and infection.?

While the study found a possible association between maternal infection and autism, it did not prove a cause-and-effect relationship.

Time Management Basics | Self improvement tips

?At my back I always hear time?s winged chariot hurrying near.?

Time management begins with the realization that without some thought and planning, we are likely to waste a great deal of time in the future and have already wasted a huge amount of our life span in the past.

Wasting time is folly since time really does have wings and our lives pass very quickly. By using proven methods we can make the most of whatever time we have.

Billy Connolly, the great Scottish comedian, describes the speed of time in his own vivid way:

?A year in my life goes like this:

?Should auld acquaintance be forgot?

?Happy birthday?

?Jingle bells! Jingle bells!?

He also tells a time related story. I?ve cleaned the language up a bit:

Two men were standing having a chat. The first man asked the second man:

?What would you do if you knew the world would end in 3 minutes time??

?I?d have sex with everything that moved,? replied the second man and then he added a question: ?What would you do??

?I?d stand perfectly still,? said the first man.

This story has a lesson. With 3 minutes to live we will tend to do what we really want to do whether it is having sex (or avoiding it!) or eating chocolate or telling our family and friends that we love them. Yet too many of us spend our lives not doing what we really want to do.

If we imagined the world was about to end soon we might finally be able to discover what we really want to do in life. Of course we still need to have the courage to do it.

The time management basic of all this is that life is too short, even when we have 30 more years and not just 3 mins to live, to waste on doing things we do not really want to do.

The number one essential of time management is to discover what we really want to achieve in life and then get on with it.

A second basic is that we don?t even have enough time to do all that we really want to do. We have to choose. I found out the hard way that you cannot learn several different musical instruments well unless you are a bit of a genius.

In my twenties, I decided I wanted to learn the bagpipes, the drums, the banjo, the guitar, the blues harp and the tin whistle.

I never got round to the tin whistle and only learned to play the

other instruments at a pretty basic level. It is wiser to focus on one key goal at a time in each key area of our lives.

Set goals that are achievable, unlike mine, and then take massive action to attain them. Set SMART Goals ? specific, measurable, attainable, results oriented, time based e.g. Do twenty pushups a day for a month. Count the pushups. Do an easy version of them if necessary (i.e. keep your knees on the ground). You feel and look stronger. You do the pushups for one month.

If one of your goals is to learn a skill like copywriting, decide to spend an hour a day for 6 months improving your copy writing. Use a spreadsheet to measure out 180 squares and cross them through after each one hour session. If you wish to learn 3 skills in 6 months, you will obviously need 540 squares.

A third basic of time management is to follow the famous advice which Charles Schwab paid $25,000 for i.e. make a list of about 6 things you want to achieve tomorrow.

Sleep on it overnight and your subconscious will provide you with the drive and the wisdom to make a good stab at achieving those 6 things in the next 24 hours.

In the morning start on the most important of those 6 things and get as far as you can. If you have anything left to do. Put it on your list for tomorrow.

I won?t take up any more of your time with this article as you are doubtless keen to make your list of 6 key things to do tomorrow.

Surprise! Tips for entertaining last minute guests #BlastOrChill ?

LG Blast Chiller

Right now my house is experiencing what I call a toddler phase, meaning there are a good dozen toys scattered around the living room, kitchen and hallway. I am a decent housekeeper but the toys are like a force of nature unto themselves. You can image how quickly my heart starts beating when my dog starts barking at the door and I get the surprise of a visit from friends and family. ?Now I have to switch gears and?transform?myself and house into something presentable. ? ? I spend one minute shooting toys into the toy box like a pro basketball player and another minute?changing?out of my ?standard sweat pant mom gear. ? ?Now that the house, kiddo and I are ready for company here are some tips I?ve learned for entertaining those last minute guests

?

1. ?I?ve learned to stock finger foods in my pantry ? nuts, cheeses, assorted salamis, fruits ?and dark chocolate. ? These make a great snack and if the surprise visit turns into a lunch/dinner visit, this acts as a nice?appetizer.

2. ?My favorite meal to make is a stew if we have?surprise?dinner guests. ?These are easy to make and you can add a variety of?vegetables?and spices. It?s also easy to feed a lot of people with this dish.

3. We only drink wine in our household and I always end up opening up a bottle ?during a visit. ?The LG Blast Chiller is a great feature that ?quickly chills a bottle of wine for surprise guests. ?This eliminates that dreaded wait time and?embarrassment?because you didn?t ?have a bottle ready to go. ?I know what?s on my wish list for our next house.

4. After our bellies are full, I love to break out the Card games and board games. ?My sister-in-law got me addicted to?dominoes?and now I spread my love of the game with anyone who pops by.

?

The LG Blast Chiller, available in the 3-Door Super Capacity French-Door refrigerator?(LFX31935), can chill a room temperature, 12oz beverage in five minutes or a bottle of wine in?just eight minutes. By comparison, a typical refrigerator takes about 40 minutes to accomplish?this task ? even in the freezer. This refrigerator is also among the largest capacity 36-inch?refrigerators currently on the market, offering almost 20 percent more space and the ability to?store over 50 gallons of milk.

US sanctions Iran minister for Internet, TV censorship - Information ...

WASHINGTON:?Washington on Thursday unveiled sanctions against four Iranians and five Iranian bodies, including the communications minister and the culture ministry, for censoring the media and the Internet.

The move against Communications Minister Reza Taghipour came after he was blamed for ordering the jamming of international satellite TV broadcasts and restricting Internet access, a State Department official said.

The United States was determined to stop the ?Iranian government from creating an ?electronic curtain? to cut Iranian citizens off from the rest of the world,? said State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland.

All those placed under sanctions were ?engaged in censorship or other activities that prohibit, limit or penalize freedom of expression or assembly by citizens of Iran,? she added in a statement.

They were also accused of limiting ?access to print or broadcast media, including by jamming international satellite broadcasts into Iran,? she said, denouncing the ?regime?s insidious actions.?

Nuland said the new designations were part of the administration?s pledge to ?hold Iranian government officials and entities responsible for the abuses carried out against their own citizens.?

Iran?s ministry of culture and Islamic guidance was also sanctioned for closing down newspapers and detaining journalists, along with other entities ?responsible for assisting the regime in its crackdown on and censorship of the Iranian people.?

The Iranian government was engaged in a campaign to ?curtail? freedoms and ?prevent the free flow of information both into and out of Iran,? Nuland said.

?Countless activists, journalists, lawyers, students, and artists have been detained, censured, tortured, or forcibly prevented from exercising their human rights,? she added.

Thursday?s new designations under a 2012 act mean Americans are banned from doing any business with the targeted Iranians, who are also barred from traveling to the United States.

How to Attract Customer Attention Online

In today?s digital world, small businesses need to attract customers both online and in person. Manage all of your sales and customer relationships with a simple cloud-based CRM like Base.
?
?

Who knows you or who do you know?

The difference is crucial.

You see it?s all very well having a ton of great connections, but if those connections have no real idea who you are, and don?t regularly interact with you, then they are essentially just a worthless distraction.

This particularly holds true for social media.

So how do you go about getting all those online socialites to stand up and take notice?
It all comes down to your image.

In today?s crazy online world, pretty much everyone has some sort of profile and they?re all competing for, fans, followers, likes, tweets and so on ? so YOU need to build YOUR profile in order to get people?s attention and get an edge over the competition.

The Internet is probably the biggest advertising platform there is, and word-of-mouth is a powerful marketing tool. In order to raise your game ? and your reputation ? you?re going to have to think very carefully how you represent yourself online.

True, online networks are a major player when it comes to reaching a wider audience and growing a global reputation, but you?ve got to be aware that whilst it gives you massive scope and huge reach, it can also mean you?ve got nowhere to hide when things get rough. This makes raising your profile critical ? it gives you much more control over how you want to be perceived, what your message is and what people say about you. If you don?t give people something to go on, they?ll simply fill in the gaps themselves, and that can be bad for business.

So what if you?ve already got a big following on Facebook and co ? think this doesn?t apply to you?

Well I?ve gotta tell ya it does. You see after a while, people forget why they started following you in the first place ? unless you know how to build your presence the right way?

Image is key.

You need to create your own unique identity.

Here?s how.

Be Bold.

Use what makes you unique. Have strong principles and stick to them. Choose and grow the key attributes you want to represent your business. These will form a big part of your identity and they are what you will be famous for.

Be Positive.

No one likes a whiner. Positivity and a ?can do? attitude breeds energy and ideas and makes you likeable. If things get rough stay level headed and rise above it ? it will strengthen your identity in the long term.

Make your website a nice place to be.

One of the aims of your social presence has got to be to get people to your website ? so when they arrive make sure it?s somewhere they?re going to be glad they stopped by. Slick, simple design with quality images and video (but not so big or so many it slows the load time right down), ease of navigation and correct spelling and grammar will all build the impression that you are a professional with an eye for detail and emphasis on user experience.

Get personal.

Proving your human and taking the time to interact with your audience will pay dividends. Always answer comments and respond to posts. Be charming and provide excellent customer service. This kind of direct contact with your target audience is key to boosting your profile. Use narrative and keep them informed ? tell them your story to engage them on a personal level. Champion a relevant cause and show them that you care ? get them involved.

Make quality contacts.

Make friends with your peers ? especially those with influence. Building and maintaining relevant contacts can lead to sharing of information, reaching a wider audience and an increase in traffic and lead generation through cross-referencing and joining forces with other professionals in the same field. This isn?t hard to do either. Simply by interacting on their social networks ? like posting comments or joining groups and making regular contributions ? you will quickly develop a relationship and become associated with them in the minds of others.

Inspire trust

References from respected third parties, positive reviews and glowing testimonials will all encourage your audience to trust you. Be open with them. Freely give them information about you and what you do. Tell them about awards you?ve received or professional organisations you?re a part of. Let them know that you?re keeping it real.
?

Building an online reputation takes time, and once you have it in place, managing it is equally important. Whatever identity you create for your business, make sure you have it in place right from the start ready to build on ? and guard it fiercely. Stay true to your message and core values and watch your profile blossom. Your public will thank you for it.

The X Factor: Season 2, Episode 12:: Wild Card (Part 1)

Nov 01, 2012

The ?X Factor?returns this week with the Top 16 contestants moving on from the Judges Houses to live shows in a two hour special, and we get to met the new X Factor hosts Mario Lopez and Khloe Kardashian! Find out more in the Kidzworld recap of Season 2, Episode 12 which aired October 31st, 2012.

The Young Adults (Demi's Group)

CeceFrey: "Because The Night" by Patti Smith.

  • Critique: With a new makeover featuring platinum blonde locks and leopard print outfit instead of paint, Cece looked and performed like a pop star should, but her vocals weren't as strong as they could have been considering how phenomenal her voice has been in the past.

Willie Jones:? ?Here for the Party? by Gretchen Wilson

  • Critique:?Willie has incredibel stage presence and can hit some low notes that just drive audiences wild, but the song choice was a little odd, and Simon noted that he didn't care for Demi's choice of styling or background dancers for the country cutie.

Paige Thomas: ?What is Love? by Haddaway

  • Critique:?Paige looked outta this world in a crazy alien-esque costume, and gave a performance that the judges all thought was the perfect way to opent he show, even if she does still need to strengthen her vocals.

Jennel Garcia: ?Home Sweet Home? by Carrie Underwood

  • Critique:?Demi has done away with Jennel's cute curls, and tried to deck her out like a rock star to give her that oomph onstage, and she stole hearts with L.A. saying he was convinced she could win. Simon though wants a return to curls, and accused Demi of making her a mini-Demi.

The Teens (Britney's Group)

Beatrice Miller: Jason Mraz?s ?I Won?t Give Up?

  • Critique:?Beatrice was hesitant about this song choice for her, but her rough but jazzy singing voice lent a lot of soul to this slow number.

Arin Ray: ?You Keep Me Hanging On? by The Supremes

  • Critique:? The judges agreed that they always enjoy seeing Arin perform, and that he's really matured as an artist, but as always his vocals could be stronger and his movements were slightly stiff.

Carly Rose Sonenclar:??Good Feeling,? by FloRida

  • Critique:?Britney wanted to bring out the fun, younger side of the little diva and decided on some fun school uniforms and this lovable pop song, but while Carly's voice was astounding the other judges didn't feel like "fun" came through, leaving them wondering if she needed more time to grow as an artist or just didn't connect to the song.

Diamond White: Train?s ?Hey Soul Sister?

  • Critique:??Diamond's performance was pretty much loved by all, but L.A. noticed that it was a little mechanical to start and they want to see her really relax onstage.

Check out Britney getting her team ready below!

The Over-25s (L.A.'s Group)

Tate Stevens: Craig Morgan?s ?Tough?

  • Critique:?Tate opted for no flashy lights and bands like some of the other acts, but the judges still found him sweet and likable.

?Vino Alan: Nickelback?s ?Gotta Be Somebody.?

  • Critique:?This song started off rocky for the performer, and the judges weren't feeling it at all (except for L.A., of course). Simon weirdly said he thought it was the song to blame and not Vino.

Jason Brock: JLo's??Dance Again.?

  • Critique:?Fog machines, Vegas-style back-up dancers, Simon thought it was all "utterly horrendous" and hated the song choice, and we have to agree that sometimes less is more.

David Correy: ?Your Love is My Love? by?Whitney Houston.

  • Critique:?David managed to really move the crowd and put a lot of feeling into his performance ( a little too much feeling according to Simon), the judges were divided on this one.?

Sister C:??Hell on Heels? by Pistol Annies

  • Critiques:?These girls sound amazing and hit all the right notes, but their main problem is being likable, and Demi and L.A. both found the performance to be a little stiff.

The Groups (Simon's Group)

1432 (formerly The Lylas): ?We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together? by Taylor Swift

  • Critique: After blowing us all away at Simon's house with their performance of "Impossible," the girls didn't quite live up to expectations with this Taylor Swift number, and Demi noted that they need to work on being comfortable as a group and coming out of their shells.

Emblem3: Matisyahu?s ?One Day?

  • Critique:??All the judges agreed that Simon made a perfect choice for these surfer studs, and Demi liked the performance so much that she could barely lookt he guys in the eye!

Lyric145: Will Smith?s ?Boom! Shake the Room? and ?Gangnam Style? Mash-up

  • Critique:?This mash-up was fun and energetic, and it got the crowd moving but it wasn't as polished as some of the other performers.?

Obese dogs at risk of health condition experienced by humans

Thursday, November 1, 2012

Veterinary scientists at the University of Liverpool have found that, like humans, obese dogs can experience metabolic syndrome, a condition that describes multiple health issues that occur in the body at the same time.

The condition occurs when a number of health problems, such as increased blood glucose and increased cholesterol levels, develop together, with the potential to increase the risk of other diseases, such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

Although canine obesity is known to cause insulin resistance, mild hypertension, and high blood cholesterol levels, it has not, until now, been investigated for links to metabolic syndrome, which is common in obese humans.

In a study involving 35 obese dogs, 20% were found to have metabolic syndrome. Similar to humans with the condition, obese dogs had increased blood insulin, suggested that the pancreas is working harder than normal to control blood glucose. Blood adiponectin, a protein produced by fat cells that helps control sugars and fats, was also at lower levels than normal. It is yet to be determined, however, what the exact health impacts of these issues are on dogs, and if they are similar to the diseases that metabolic syndrome can cause in humans.

The team demonstrated, however, that the metabolic abnormalities identified in obese dogs, improved when they successfully lost weight.

Dr Alex German, from the University's Department of Obesity and Endocrinology, said: "It is estimated that one third to a half of the UK dog population is overweight. A previous study that we conducted showed that a dog's quality of life improved with weight loss, resulting in better vitality and reduced emotional distress.

"This new research creates a lot of new questions for us. It suggests that dogs develop metabolic syndrome, similar to humans with obesity-related health problems. We now need to investigate, however, what health consequences this may have for dogs. The key point for us is that the problem can be resolved with successful weight loss, and this must be a priority for pet owners with obese dogs."

Holiday Gift Idea Giveaway: Funnybone Toys Family Games

We love playing games here and I am always on the lookout for fun, interactive ones that everyone can play. When I found out about Funnybone Toys' line of card games, I was intrigued by their unique twists on favorite games and loved the way they looked, so I was happy to try out two of their popular games. Funnybone Toys makes games and toys that use good design to stimulate creativity so they give your brain a workout while you have fun.

Spectrix is a Rummy-like game with a twist: colors. Instead of having numbers and letters, Spectrix has plain colored cards in 12 different colors and the object is to run out of cards in your hand by producing color collections, 3 or more cards of the same color, or color sequences, a run of colors in a specific order. This game follows much of the same rules as traditional Rummy and is even more fun. Because the cards are simply colored and the object is simple as well, even my 5 1/2 year old can play, even though it is designed for kids and adults over 8 years old. We all had a blast playing this game many times and I was thoroughly impressed with its unique nature and the sturdiness of the cards and the storage box. For 2-6 players, this game is entertaining, creative, not to mention beautifully designed, and it would make an excellent gift for any game lover in your life.

(Click any photo to enlarge)

Array, which is specified for 2-6 players age 8 and up as well, is a game where players compete to place the most multi-colored cards into connecting patterns. You can do special moves, like splicing and slicing, that just add to the fun. This game reminds me of a mash up of Dominoes and Uno, all the fun parts of each. This one is slightly more complicated than Spectrix, but equally as fun. The object is the same: run out of cards before your opponents and the cards are just as beautiful and bright, but that's where the similarities end. Once we mastered the concept, we had tons of fun playing this game as well and it is just as sturdy and well-made as Spectrix.

Both of these card games from Funnybone Toys can be purchased at 60 specialty stores nationwide. To see if there is a retailer near you or to buy online, visit their website at www.funnybonetoys.com. Each of these games retail for approximately $14.99 each.

Thank you to Funnybone Toys for providing complimentary product samples for us to base this review upon and for providing an additional product for our contest prize.

The winner of this giveaway will be able to choose one of the following games to receive from Funnybone Toys . . . Array, Classic CUBU, or Spectrix.

Toad Hall gets Wifi in the Willows with new app

LONDON (Reuters) - Crash Mr. Toad's motor car into a hedge, make those dastardly weasels dance and drive Mole from his hole with a new interactive iPad app based on classic children's novel "The Wind in the Willows".

The app breathes digital life into Kenneth Grahame's tale about the adventures of Ratty, Mole, Toad, the curmudgeonly Badger and their ruthless weasel foes from the Wild Wood.

The Wind in the Willows app available on www.bibliodome.com has more than 190 interactive pages, which allow the user to conjure up butterflies from thin air, smoke Mole out of his hole, make the band of weasels sing and dance, chuck stones off a bridge to sink Toad's boat, dress him, and make it snow.

The app book was put together by a three-man team comprising novelist Sam North, artist Steve Dooley and computer programmer Bobby Gilbert.

"From the start we insisted that the story must remain at the heart of the project," North said. "Everyone knows what a great, well-loved tale it is."

Dooley said he found inspiration for his illustrations in what Grahame said to the original illustrator back in 1908: "I love these little people," he said, "so please be kind to them."

In order to bring the drawings to life, Gilbert spent hours researching the minutiae of each and every page.

"We fell under the spell of the book -- its characters, its humor, the wonderful eccentric lyricism of the words. It absorbed us; we had to do justice to it."

As Toad would say: "Poop-poop, off I'll go..."

Scientists create 'endless supply' of myelin-forming cells

ScienceDaily (Nov. 1, 2012) ? In a new study appearing this month in the Journal of Neuroscience, researchers have unlocked the complex cellular mechanics that instruct specific brain cells to continue to divide. This discovery overcomes a significant technical hurdle to potential human stem cell therapies; ensuring that an abundant supply of cells is available to study and ultimately treat people with diseases.

"One of the major factors that will determine the viability of stem cell therapies is access to a safe and reliable supply of cells," said University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) neurologist Steve Goldman, M.D., Ph.D., lead author of the study. "This study demonstrates that -- in the case of certain populations of brain cells -- we now understand the cell biology and the mechanisms necessary to control cell division and generate an almost endless supply of cells."

The study focuses on cells called glial progenitor cells (GPCs) that are found in the white matter of the human brain. These stem cells give rise to two cells found in the central nervous system: oligodendrocytes, which produce myelin, the fatty tissue that insulates the connections between cells; and astrocytes, cells that are critical to the health and signaling function of oligodendrocytes as well as neurons.

Damage to myelin lies at the root of a long list of diseases, such as multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, and a family of deadly childhood diseases called pediatric leukodystrophies. The scientific community believes that regenerative medicine -- in the form of cell transplantation -- holds great promise for treating myelin disorders. Goldman and his colleagues, for example, have demonstrated in numerous animal model studies that transplanted GPCs can proliferate in the brain and repair damaged myelin.

However, one of the barriers to moving forward with human treatments for myelin disease has been the difficulty of creating a plentiful supply of necessary cells, in this case GPCs. Scientists have been successful at getting these cells to divide and multiply in the lab, but only for limited periods of time, resulting in the generation of limited numbers of usable cells.

"After a period of time, the cells stop dividing or, more typically, begin to specialize and form astrocytes which are not useful for myelin repair," said Goldman. "These cells could go either way but they essentially choose the wrong direction."

Overcoming this problem required that Goldman's lab master the precise chemical symphony that occurs within stem cells, and which instructs them when to divide and multiply, and when to stop this process and become oligodendrocytes and astrocytes.

One of the key players in cell division is a protein called beta-catenin. Beta-catenin is regulated by another protein in the cell called glycogen synthase kinase 3 beta (GSK3B). GSK3B is responsible for altering beta-catenin by adding an additional phosphate molecule to its structure, essentially giving it a barcode that the cell then uses to sort the protein and send it off to be destroyed. During development, when cell division is necessary, this process is interrupted by another signal that blocks GSK3B. When this occurs, the beta-catenin protein is spared destruction and eventually makes its way to the cell's nucleus where it starts a chemical chain reaction that ultimately instructs the cell to divide. However, after a period of time this process slows and, instead of replicating, the cells begin to then commit to becoming one type or another. The challenge for scientists was to find another way to essentially trick these cells into continuing to divide, and to do so without risking the uncontrolled growth that could otherwise result in tumor formation.

The new discovery hinges on a receptor called protein tyrosine phosphatase beta/zeta (PTPRZ1). Goldman and his team long suspected that PTPRZ1 played an important role in cell division; the receptor shows up prominently in molecular profiles of GPCs. After a six-year effort to discern the receptor's function, they found that it works in concert with GSK3B and helps "label" beta-catenin protein for either destruction or nuclear activity. The breakthrough was the identification of a molecule -- called pleiotrophin -- that essentially blocks the function of the PTPRZ1 receptor. They found that by regulating the levels of pleiotrophin, they were able to essentially "short circuit" PTPRZ1's normal influence on cell division, allowing the cells to continue dividing.

While the experiments were performed on cells derived from human brain tissue, the authors contend that the same process could also be applied to GPCs derived from embryos or from "reprogrammed" skin cells. This would greatly expand the number of cells potentially derived from single patient samples, whether for transplantation back to those same individuals or for use in other patients.

Additional authors on the paper include its first author, URMC graduate student Crystal McClain, Ph.D., and Fraser Sim, Ph.D., a member of Goldman's lab and now an assistant professor at the University at Buffalo. The study was supported by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, the Department of Defense, the Adelson Medical Research Foundation, and the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Fuel tanker explosion kills 14 in Saudi capital

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (AP) ? A fuel truck exploded in an apparent roadway accident on Thursday in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, engulfing buildings and cars in flames and killing at least 14 people and injuring 60, witnesses and officials said.

The death toll could rise as rescue crews picked through the charred vehicles and rubble near the Saudi National Guard building in an industrial area in the city's eastern district. Columns of smoke could be seen rising from scene.

A security official told The Associated Press at least 14 people were killed and 60 were injured.

There was no immediate suspicion of terrorist links based on witness accounts, which suggested the fuel tanker exploded after striking part of a highway underpass.

The official and witnesses spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media.

Would You Like To Learn About Online Marketing?

Thursday, November 1st, 2012 at 7:51 am ?

When you are just starting out with internet marketing, it can be helpful to take advantage of some proven tips and techniques. Here are some ways you can get started with this potentially lucrative business opportunity.

There are many affiliate promotion books out there; it?s up to you to weed out the rubbish and focus on the reliable ones for information. You are dedicating your time and effort with no guarantee of receiving any compensation in the beginning. If you read books, you may be stalling. Walk away from the books and start putting your plans into action.

To make sure you accomplish everything you want to, set small, easily achievable goals each day. This gives me a nice overview of what I still need to accomplish, which helps me stay on task.

A wise affiliate marketer is truthful about his affiliations. Make sure that your affiliations are clear, and the general idea of you site comes across to your potential customers. If your site visitors feel you haven?t been honest about making money as an affiliate, they can simply ignore your link and go right to the merchant?s site.

Your affiliate status may suffer if you choose to market some of the web?s most popular products. Yes, you always want to market quality, but quality does not necessarily mean popularity. You are going run into a lot of rivals if you pick something that is wildly popular. It may be difficult to show substantial profits.

For the most profitable affiliate promotion program, retain only those affiliates who have proven they can make you money. You should review your affiliates all the time. If you eliminate your lowest-performing affiliates, you make room for the advertisers that make you more money.

You should always be proud to stand by the quality of your product when selling through online marketing networks. By having reviews of your product on the Internet, it gives users a positive outlook on your product. Try getting on some related forums and posting about how much you?ve enjoyed the product. Always remember to affix affiliate links to the bottom of any post, article or review. This will generate more affiliate revenue for you and gives customers a direct way to purchase your products.

If someone visits a site about sports, they expect to see sports-themed news, ads, and merchandise. Therefore, the link you put on an affiliate website should be spo0rts related to be of any benefit. An affiliate program that is related to your niche is much more likely to get clicks than something completely off the wall.

Niches can provide extra opportunities to generate affiliate money. Niche markets attract a smaller but highly motivated following. Because of its specialized nature, interested customers may find a niche market company quickly, while the more generalized product provider waits to be found in a crowded field. This means a niche market may become profitable more quickly than a larger one.

You can use affiliate marketing programs to develop a very effective online marketing scheme for your business. Affiliates can drive visitors to your site, more than any other technique. Choose your affiliate partners wisely. Look for those that pay generous commissions, are easy for customers to use, and maintain track records for reliability.

Online marketing isn?t rocket science, so don?t overthink things. Find a popular product that you know will be a hit and learn how you want to market it. People often avoid popular internet marketing niches due to competition. The key here is that, profitable niches can make it easier for converting sales than a lesser niche. Additionally, there are lots of clients waiting to make purchases in popular markets. Then all you have to do is find a way to rise above competition with a new angle.

As this article has shown you, affiliate promotion is a great way to build your business, and get more money for you. Following these tips leads you on the road to becoming an expert in affiliate marketing.
