Are you able to Truly Get Wealthy on the web? | Step Talk

Naturally we all want too. Folks use the net to function from property daily, and quite a few of them earn a very good living from it. Having said that, most don't. So, is it really doable to obtain flat out wealthy from the internet?

Effectively, that depends upon what your thought of being wealthy or making a fortune definitely signifies for you personally. If operating from the internet permits you to spend your bills, place food on the table, gas inside the auto, and clothes on Little Laquita's back, then yes, it is indeed feasible to obtain rich online. Even so, in the event you are thinking in numbers closer towards the upper hundreds of thousands, millions, and also billions, then the likelihood of getting able to produce that kind of money online is almost certainly wishful thinking. Not impossible, thoughts you (look at the reasonably current fortunes of men and women like Michael Dell of Dell Computer systems, Jeff Bezos of Amazon, Pierry Omidyar of Ebay, and David Filo of Yahoo!-all are worth billions of dollars today), just not very most likely.

There you have it. I stated it. Most of you reading this will not be likely to obtain rich online, but you may make an above typical living. If anyone tells you anything unique, preserve listening to them since it won't be lengthy ahead of they lie about something else!

You can find quite a few web sites that continue to promote systems for making a fortune on the internet. Purchasing these is additional most likely to make dollars for the seller than for you personally. Generally they are scams that attempt to get you to buy supplies and gear for a thing that wont be profitable, if it even exists. They'll throw ridiculously high numbers at you, promising you may make that quantity of funds if you just stick to their monthly strategy of $29.95 per month or charge $97 dollars for your Paypal account.

Some internet websites, nevertheless, are very clear in their definition of what a fortune is. For example, when you check out a website that claims you could make a fortune online by completing on the web surveys at twenty-five dollars every single, you're likely secure. They are truthful concerning the income you may make, and that you are smart sufficient to understand that unless you full thousands of surveys a month, you arent going to be in a position to obtain wealthy on the internet employing this plan. But when you will need some additional cash for the holidays, go for it.

Your dream to make a fortune on the net is equivalent towards the dreams of so many other individuals. And, though it's not an totally impossible dream, it's not an conveniently obtainable a single, either. Have patience, do investigation, and most importantly, come up with one thing bigger than Yahoo!

Those who make a fortune on the internet possess a dream and are prepared to go for it. Often they invest funds. I will be the initial to tell you that in order to have something resembling a viable small business on the internet you are going to must invest into your business. Nonetheless, you have to spend some time during your research and not jump at every single supplying that sounds superior. Find out what operates, and what doesn't work. Set up price range of what you can invest to start your world wide web business. If you are married, go over this new venture along with your wife and get her buy-in. If you are setting up a spending budget, do not count on to create a profit for at the least six months. Then perform at your online small business consistently every single day.

To create a fortune on the web, it assists to become among the very first to identify a want, like eBay did with internet auctions. If your item is among the first, you have little competition.

To make a fortune on the web you will need to promote effectively. Yahoo and eBay are both an huge good results, but they had to let people know they existed to acquire began. In case you have no website traffic, you have no buyers.

You can make a million on the web. Just keep in mind that it is going to take many challenging operate. To produce a million on the web will not be considerably distinctive from producing a million inside the offline globe.

Determine a distinctive marketplace, learn all you may about it, and promote it nicely. From there, don't just sit back and watch it develop. Learn from it and maintain improving to develop your client base. This is the very best way for escalating your probabilities of finding rich online.

New round of quantitative easing biggest yet?

CHICAGO (Reuters) - The U.S. Federal Reserve's third round of bond-buying could ultimately rival the size of its first huge quantitative easing, which was widely seen as boosting growth.

The sheer scale of the program and the radical shift in policy it marks will shape the legacy of Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke, whose term may end before the buying is through.

The Fed initially disappointed some investors on Thursday when it said it would buy $40 billion of mortgage-backed securities each month. That is far less than the $75 billion a month it bought in its second round of bond-buying, or the more than $100 billion monthly tab for its first round.

But this time, the Fed has promised that "if the outlook for the labor market does not improve substantially," it won't stop buying and could ramp up its spending further.

Depending how the Fed defines "substantially" and how long it takes to get there, it could end up buying bonds for several years, adding $1.7 trillion or more to its balance sheet, analysts say.

By comparison, the Fed's initial round of quantitative easing, first announced in November 2008 as the U.S. economy slumped into a deep recession, totaled $1.75 trillion .

"They've clearly committed to do what it takes to get unemployment down where they want it," said Pierre Ellis, an economist at New York-based Decision Economics. "There's no limit."

To Ellis, the "big bazooka" of open-ended bond purchases -- designed to boost the economy by lowering borrowing costs -- won't have much immediate impact because the economy's main headwind is uncertainty over fiscal policy and the outcome of a presidential election.

That's a view shared by several of the central bank's hawkish members.

U.S. Treasuries sold off broadly on Friday and 10-year and 30-year debt yields rose to their highest levels since May as the new stimulus spurred risk-taking in stocks, reducing demand for bonds, and as bond investors feared inflation from the program.

Disappointment that Treasuries were not included in the central bank's third round of quantitative easing added to the selloff, traders said.

A rise in long-term yields runs counter to the goals of the program, which include pushing down long-term borrowing costs.

Bernanke, whose term ends in January 2014, sought on Thursday to tamp down worries that he is aiming for higher inflation, which is near the Fed's 2 percent target. The goal, he said, is to bring down unemployment, which at 8.1 percent is well above what most economists believe it should be.

Still, he acknowledged the possibility that the Fed could tolerate some period of higher inflation.

"If inflation goes above the target level, as we talk about in our statement in January, we take a balanced approach," he said at a press conference following the Fed's policy shift. "We bring inflation back to the target over time but we do it in a way that takes into account the deviations of both of our objectives from their targets."

Many analysts say the Fed's latest program may exceed its predecessors in size, and more importantly, also pack the desired punch.

"We believe that with a strong commitment from the Fed, progress in Europe and the passing of the U.S. election, the U.S. economy will have a pretty decent shot at achieving above-trend growth in 2013," Julia Coronado, an economist at BNP Paribas, wrote in a note to investors.

Thursday's announcement could add another $1.2 trillion to $1.7 trillion to the Fed's balance sheet, she said.

    TIED TO THE MAST

The Fed has kept short-term rates near zero since December 2008, and Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke has led the U.S. central bank into ever-newer territory to lower real rates further.

After the first round of bond-buying in 2008 and 2009, the Fed resorted in 2010 and 2011 to a second round to ward off deflation as the recovery faltered.

As he doubles down on quantitative easing, Bernanke's approach looks flexible enough to win support from both ends of the Fed spectrum - the doves who want more easing to bring down unemployment, and the hawks who worry that more easing could overheat the economy and spark inflation.

"Everybody likes tying it to economic conditions," said Paul Ashworth, chief U.S. economist at Toronto-based Capital Economics. He estimates the program could eventually grow to between $960 billion to $1.44 trillion in size.

"The doves like this because they think the markets will think it's even bigger" than QE2, he said. At the same time, "it gives the hawks something, that if the economy picks up, they can get this stopped."

The Fed did not say how big it expects its latest program to be, but the clues are plain in its quarterly economic forecasts, also published Thursday.

Only three Fed policymakers expect the unemployment rate, now at 8.1 percent, to fall more than half a percentage point by the end of next year.

If the Fed sees 7 percent as substantial progress, the forecasts suggest continued bond buying through late 2014; if a bit lower, bond-buying could be needed through mid-2015, Ashworth said. Underscoring that interpretation, the Fed said Thursday it expects to keep rates low until at least then.

Before the crisis, unemployment was closer to 5 percent.

Chicago Fed President Charles Evans has spent the last year arguing strongly for the Fed to tie monetary policy more closely to economic milestones by vowing to keep rates low until unemployment fell below 7 percent.

Doing so, he says, would avoid the temptation of backing off from easing at the first signs of economic strengthening. In a series of speeches in recent months, he has likened a strong Fed commitment to low rates to a modern-day Ulysses tied to the mast of his ship, prevented from responding to the siren call of premature monetary tightening.

While the Fed did not embrace Evans' 7-percent unemployment rate target, it did adopt his view that the Fed should hold fast to easy policy even after the recovery picks up speed -- a historic shift in policy.

DON'T STOP 'TIL YOU GET ENOUGH

Any eventual ceiling on the size of QE3 looks sky-high. The Fed may only buy Treasuries and agency-backed debt, and some Fed officials say it has bought nearly as much of the U.S. national debt as it can without impairing the market's function.

But with mortgage-backed securities, there is plenty room to run: economists estimate the size of that market at more than $7 trillion, although the Fed would need to avoid disrupting the market's function.

Michael Gapen, an economist at Barclays, sees QE3 topping out at $700 billion - slightly more than the second round of quantitative easing, but less than half the first.

The impact, he said, could be limited to boosting economic growth by a few tenths of a percentage point, although that could be enough to generate momentum.

"If you can keep the economy persistently above trend, then that has a self-reinforcing effect," he said.

Combined with the European Central Bank's vow to buy as many bonds as needed from euro zone states -- on condition they undertake reforms -- QE3 "has the potential to be very positive for the U.S. economy," Gapen said.

However, he said one real threat to the economy remains: a raft of tax increases and spending cuts that will automatically take effect at the end of the year unless Congress acts.

But if lawmakers successfully avoid the so-called fiscal cliff, the outcome for the economy could beat expectations and ultimately trim the size of QE3.

Field trips ? UALR International Business Trip to Erfurt, Germany

I apologize for the lack of posts in the last week. Our time here as been crazy and packed with activities and other adventures.

Last week continued with more lectures, guest speakers, and field trips. On Friday night, we had our mid-term ceremony (more on that in a following post).

Last Wednesday afternoon (Aug. 29), we all went outside to the university?s courtyard for several organizational behavior-related activities. In one, we were divided into the groups we were going to be in to create our business plans. But instead of working on a business plan, we were each given four or five pieces of paper, each with a clue. We were all to share our clues with each other ? by telling, not showing each other our slips of paper ? so we could put the clues together and solve a problem. The ultimate goal of the exercise was not the math (which was a good thing for most of the groups) but to see how we all work together and communicate within our groups.

In another exercise, we were all given slips of paper, but this time with the name of an animal. We were told to close our eyes, make the noise of our given animal, and find the others making the same noise. My animal was a bird. I?ll admit, I had to open my eyes part of the time ? I didn?t want to run into something or fall over. I finally found my group despite the the differences in our calls; I was saying ?tweet tweet? (perhaps indicative of too much time on Twitter?) while the others went ?chirp chirp.? (Another bunch of students had the challenge of determining what sound a fish makes.)

On Thursday (Aug. 30) we visited Erfurter Sportbetriebe ? a multi-use sports arena which included a large ice skating rink, a speed (ice) skating track, an indoor arena, and an outdoor arena. An Olympic medalist even made an appearance. Daniela Anschultz-Thoms, 2006 Olympic speed skating champion was kind enough to join us at the arena.

On Friday (Aug. 31), we traveled about an hour to a golf resort in Blankenhain. It was gorgeous out there. We were all even given brief golf lessons ? a try at the driving range and then putting. I?ve been to a driving range once and have played miniature golf many times, but this was my first trip to an actual golf course. And surprisingly, I wasn?t bad! (Well, when my club actually came into contact with the ball.)

    The Hebrew University of Jerusalem

Jerusalem, Sept. 6, 2012 A synthetic, anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic family of drugs to combat a variety of illnesses while avoiding detrimental side effects has been developed by a Hebrew University of Jerusalem researcher.

The researcher is Saul Yedgar, who is the Walter and Greta Stiel Professor of Heart Studies at the Institute for Medical Research Israel-Canada at the Hebrew University Faculty of Medicine.

Inflammatory/allergic diseases affect billions of people worldwide, and treatments for these conditions are a major focus of the pharmaceutical industry. The most common drugs currently used to treat these numerous diseases are steroids, which are potent but are associated with severe side effects. These include metabolic changes (weight gain, increased blood pressure, diabetes), organ-specific effects (glaucoma, cataracts, bone fragility), and even psychotrophic side effects (depression, psychosis).

For decades, alternatives, such as biological NSAIDs (non-steroidal alternative anti-inflammatory drugs) have been the focus of the pharmaceutical industry. The resulting drugs have been commercially successful, but have not produced genuine alternatives to steroids due to their limitations. Synthetic NSAIDs are less potent and have their own serious side effects, including cardiovascular disorders, stomach bleeding and respiratory disorders. The biological drugs are costly and, must be injected and have rare but very severe side effects.

Inflammatory/allergic diseases present different symptoms affecting different organs, such as skin inflammations (dermatitis, psoriasis); airway injury and allergy (asthma, cystic fibrosis, allergic rhinitis); osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis; intestinal inflammation (ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease); central nervous system inflammation (multiple sclerosis), as well as atherosclerosis and cancer metastasis.

What they have in common is that all of them share biochemical mechanisms. A key one among them is the action of an enzyme family (PLA2) that initiates the production of a cascade of pro-inflammatory mediators involved in the induction and propagation of the diverse inflammatory diseases.

In Prof. Yedgar's lab at the Hebrew University, he and his associates have designed and constructed an entirely novel synthetic generation of drugs that control the PLA activity and the subsequent cascade of pro-inflammatory mediators, thereby providing multi-functional, anti-inflammatory drugs (MFAIDs).

MFAIDs have shown excellent safety and were found efficient in treating diverse inflammatory/allergic conditions in animal models, using different ways of administration oral, rectal, intravenous, inhaled and injected. These conditions included sepsis, inflammatory bowel diseases, asthma and central nervous system inflammation.

In particular, in two clinical studies MFAIDs have been shown to be safe and efficient in treating contact dermatitis, when incorporated into skin cream, and allergic rhinitis, when administered as a nasal spray.

This platform technology has been exclusively licensed from the Hebrew University through the university's Yissum Technology Transfer Company to Morria Biopharmaceuticals PLC (a British company), which is currently developing these drugs to treat inflammatory diseases of the airways (hay-fever, cystic fibrosis), the skin (eczema), the eye (conjunctivitis) and the gut (colitis, Crohn's disease).

For his groundbreaking work, Prof. Yedgar was one of the winners of this year's Kaye Innovation Awards at the Hebrew University. The Kaye Awards have been given annually since 1994. Isaac Kaye of England, a prominent industrialist in the pharmaceutical industry, established the awards to encourage faculty, staff and students of the Hebrew University to develop innovative methods and inventions with good commercial potential which will benefit the university and society. The awards were presented this year during the annual meeting of the Hebrew University Board of Governors.

Democrat compares GOP tactics to Nazi propaganda

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) ? The chairman of the California Democratic Party has compared Republican tactics during the presidential campaign to the "big lie" strategy most famously employed by Nazi propagandists.

California Democratic chief John Burton made the remarks Monday in an interview with San Francisco station KCBS while in Charlotte for the Democratic National Convention.

Burton said the Republicans lie and don't care whether people know they lie and that, quote, "As long as you lie, Joseph Goebbels (GUR'-buhls), the big lie, you keep repeating it."

Goebbels was the chief of Nazi propaganda. Nazi leader Adolf Hitler believed the "big lie" had a greater chance of being believed.

Republicans immediately criticized Burton and called for an apology. Burton later issued a statement saying that he "humbly apologized" to anyone offended by his comparison.

It?s the rare CEO who demotes himself.

Yet, that?s exactly what Twitter chief Evan Williams did two years ago, stepping down to focus on strategy while handing over the top job to Dick Costolo, an executive with greater business acumen.

By his own admission, Williams is an idea guy, cautious and deliberate, not people-oriented but someone who understands what Internet users want.

Credit him with the self-awareness and confidence to know his limits and act in the best interest of the fledgling company.

How Well Do You Know Your Kids?

I had the unique privilege of putting my boy to bed tonight. Usually, his daddy does the bedtime routine while I am with his big sister. But big sis is away at a sleepover and daddy needed a shower after helping friends move so I was blessed with the treat of feeding and rocking my sweet, little man tonight.

As I sat with him and watched him drink milk, he looked up at me with his big, brown eyes and grabbed my hand from time to time to hold. I sat, gushing with love for my child, trying desperately to find the perfect words to pray over him.

May he be a man of strength and honor, Lord. May he know love and kindness and most of all Jesus, I prayed.

And while I know those prayers are fervent and good, I couldn?t help but think there must be more. More unique requests I could lay before the Lord. More specific prayers.

I?ve been thinking about this a lot lately for both of my children. Not just in the area of prayer but also as it pertains to how I guide them. I know it?s true that no two children are alike (even siblings) and while I believe there are some absolutes to this parenting thing, I understand that I must know ? I mean, truly know my children if I am going to mother them effectively.

The concept of knowing my children first struck me as I read Kisses from Katie earlier this year. I was blown away by the way this young mother knew her girls enough to write a full paragraph about each of their unique personalities. . .even the little ones. What a sweet testimony to her maturity as a new mom. I longed to know my children this way. Had I not been paying attention? Were they just too young? I?d always thought I couldn?t verbalize their personalities because they were still developing. That may be true to some extent but I now believe if I pay close enough attention and ask the Lord to open my eyes, I can see more clearly into their hearts and minds.

Motherhood is not one size fits all. I?ve always thought the sizing up was about me but I was only partially right. Motherhood is not one size fits all and neither is childhood. Our children?s personalities are as unique as our own. The only way to be an effective mother is to know your child for the sake of loving them and leading them well.

For me, this means that I stop and think about things they say and do that are clues to what is going on inside of them. It means I spend time at night after they are in bed talking with my husband about the silly, adorable and sometimes utterly frustrating things they did that day. Together we process what it means and how it might reflect who they are and what they need from us.

?O, Lord you have searched me and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. . .You are familiar with all my ways.? Psalm 139:1-3

This chapter is Psalm is such a wonderful example from our Abba Father. He searches us and knows us. He is familiar with all of our ways. What a beautiful picture of motherhood. The Psalmist goes on to pray. . .

?Search me, oh God and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.? Psalm 139:23-24

Moms, we must search our children and know their hearts fully if we are going to effectively parent them. We cannot apply the ?rules? like a blanket over their lives. We must consider their uniqueness before we lay out boundaries, structure and strategy.

Then and only then can we successfully guide their lives.

Moms, how have you purposed to know your children? If you feel so inclined, we?d love for you to share about your unique little ones. I?ll start. . .

My sweet girl, Hope (4 yrs old) is a chameleon. Her personality changes depending on the situation she is in. She is timid and shy when around people she is not yet comfortable with but give her time and she?ll explode. At home or with those she knows well, she is a firecracker of energy and fun. She is sassy and a bit strong-willed around her family. But in a structured environment (such as school) she is well behaved and helpful. She has such a sweet spirit (underneath her sass) and with the right guidance will be a force to be reckoned with.

My little man, Joshua (14 months) is truly a bundle of joy. He has worn a smile on his face most of the time since he was teeny, tiny. He?s always been pretty social. He lights up any time he hears music and loves to dance. He has little fear and climbs on anything in sight. He?s inquisitive and loves to explore, leaving no stone unturned. Watch out though, my boy has a very tender heart. With the right guidance, he will be a gentle leader.

Don't Follow This Relationship Advice: The Liberal Long-Distance ...

My last relationship blog was well-received by my Mom and former boss, so I figured that I?d help some of my unlucky-in-love friends by typing a whole bunch of words in response to their anonymous questions. If you have a question you?d like me to answer, submit it here (it?s really anonymous!)

    ?

How do you make a long distance relationship work?

I?m a big fan of the idea of a healthy long distance relationship, mostly because I?m a big fan of healthy relationships in general. What keeps most relationships from working, at least in my experience, is that they involve people. Even the best people are bad at dealing with things at times, so adding variables like distance, differing schedules, or daddy issues makes even the most theoretically perfect couples buckle. But when there?s distance, what about the essentials: quality time, daily maintenance and, well, you know?that other kind of quality time?

Even though it complicates the complications that are inherent in intrapersonal entanglements, when it comes to distance, I don?t think that it is the ultimate handicap (see: daddy issues). We have the thing that every other geographically-challenged couple in history did not have: very few boundaries regarding communication. The internet is damn near the only thing that can make some long distance tolerable. As someone who maintains 90% of her IRL friendships with the internet, I can vouch for being able to build genuine, strong friendships without much face-to-face contact. The key is to just treat those friendships/relationships as you do the ones you have to maintain on a daily face-to-face basis. Basically, all relationships take work, and distance isn?t an excuse to put someone lower on your priority list or the reason why you can?t make it work.

You can have meaningful contact with someone regularly, but it?s the mutual willingness to deal with the frustrations that will arise that will determine what?s to come. If you care enough to fancy the idea of distance, latch onto that and keep it up. You have to combat the longing for huggy-touchy-cuddlytimes by doing what everyone has to do: pay attention to one another. There?s also the much-cited-by-people-who-don?t-suck-at-long-distance argument that it makes the time you get to spend together amplified in quality. Seriously, if you?re contemplating or already knees deep in a telecommunicationship, keep your eye on the long-term goal of having a healthy, compassionate, mutually generous relationship. Expect complications, not just because of distance, but because you?re humans taking a risk that might just make you happy. As I will continue to say every time I write these posts: the worst that will happen is that it doesn?t work out.

    ?

What?s a good way to develop (grow, find yourself, become your own person, etc) when you?re in a relationship with someone you?re very close to, and have been for years? I love my boyfriend and want to remain with him, but I still want to have something apart from him, if only to make myself a better person with a stronger sense of self, to in turn share with him.

I am 23, living out of a suitcase, and I recently dyed a swath of my hair turquoise. That whole ?finding myself? thing is sort of my only identity right now, and some of that was triggered by investing too heavily in the people I was dating instead of myself. Part of that is due to dating the same guy off-and-on-and-off from the age of 14 to 21, but that might have been a symptom more than the cause. The fact that you?re insightful enough to realize that your long-term relationship might be keeping you back from being you is a pretty good sign that you?re doing just fine in the realm of interpersonal development.

I didn?t really try to be anyone but that guy?s girlfriend until I got dumped. Here are the things I wish I had been doing (and have done in the two years since) for your self-development consideration:

    1. Do things by yourself. If your partner doesn?t want to see that movie or concert or can?t make it because of reasons, you are not suddenly exempt from it. Being an adult involves being comfortable being alone, so it?s not a terrible idea to branch out on your own.
    2. ?Make new/keep old friends. Seriously, don?t let your beau be the end-all. Let this be a friendly reminder that boyfriends/girlfriends are friends you can make out with. Even though you can?t run the bases with all your other friends, they?re still pretty important.
    3. Be okay with the possibility that you might grow away from/out of the relationship. If growing as a person means that you might not work out, you?re doing everyone involved a disservice by arresting development.

If you?re worried about it, talk about it. There?s a chance that you?re both looking to grow as individuals and as a couple, which means you?re going to be a-ok.

    ?

I have trouble dating as a liberal woman in the south. It?s hard to let myself consider chemistry when the basics like ?no homophobes? is a huge barrier. Advice?

You ?n me both, girl. My first piece of advice is to leave the South, but I know that you?re probably too in love with the heat and mosquitoes to ever head in a more northerly and liberal direction. If you?re open to long distance, I?d suggest driving to your nearest metropolitan center and sitting in Starbucks reading JD Salinger for a few hours a week. Before you know it, you?ll find yourself in a threesome (You, a rebellious son of a preacher and his Che Guevara t-shirt) Also, you can buy one of those ?little blue dot in a big red state? decals just so nobody has any doubts that you?re not voting for anyone but the incumbent this November.

But seriously, if you?re stuck here for awhile, I can assure you that there are liberal fellas all over the place, many of them are also brooding about the lack of liberal ladies. The most like-minded people I?ve met in the South share common interests, so doing things that you enjoy might lead to not having to pick the lesser of two evils when filling out your dating ballot*. While I?m not suggesting compromising your values, don?t let minor differences in ideology destroy what attraction and chemistry might make worthwhile. Many of us young, Southern love-seekers are still forming our opinions, often with some regrets along the way. For instance, just because a person (who is definitely not me) might have campaigned pretty heavily for a fringe Republican candidate in 2008? doesn?t mean they haven?t grown up a lot and really started to value universal healthcare. Politics are not your sole identity, so give people a fair shot so long as they?re not egregiously violating your oh-no-no list.? That?s a two-way street for liberals and conservatives alike. If you?re open to accepting the minor misalignments of otherwise worthy candidates, you might open up your options significantly.

Tl;dr: Give everyone a chance, but stick to your values, lady. Don?t let someone?s handsome face override their use of ?gay? as an adjective for ?stupid?, but maybe you can forgive them for being a little conflicted about the death penalty. However, if there?s a even the vaguest outline of a ?W: THE PRESIDENT? sticker on his pickup, no one will fault you for calling a cab.

    ?

    ?

    *That was excessive. I?m sorry.

Savoring Servant: Business take over of nonprofit and government ...

Have you noticed?? Business is taking over? the government and nonprofits are all being gradually redirected by corporate, as in ?business?, interests.? If only these interests were truly ?corporate?, as in our ?common good?. Consider the common corporate belief that bigger is better. This belief has been forced onto other sectors. Supersizing isn?t just for fast food menus; nonprofit and school mergers have become popular.? This has happened despite studies that have proven smaller schools are more effective in educating students than larger ones. Efficiency and reduction in costs have become much bigger priorities. The recently proposed nonprofit healthcare merger between Health Partners and Blue Cross Blue Shield is an example. If you are a business, and you get big enough, you become ?to big to fail? and can expect taxpayers to come to your aid. Public education has become suspect. Unions are demonized. Schools are becoming more business like. Instead of taxes paying for our children?s extracurricular activities they now have fees.? If you child wants to be in debate, drama or a sports team, be ready to pay extra. The business world?s outcry for testing has created a testing industry within education.? As a math tutor I?ve witnessed how third grade children and teachers are stressed about passing their Minnesota Comprehensive Exams. How is it that so many of our current business, government and nonprofit leaders were able to succeed, when their early schooling was diluted with classes like art, gym, music, and home economics? Isn?t innovative and creative thinking still vital to success in the 21st century? With our nation?s obesity epidemic don?t we need to teach our children about nutrition and encourage physical activity? These things are just as critical to our nation?s future and ?bottom line? as the core subjects of reading, writing and arithmetic, and yes, of course, Microsoft Office. The one area where bigger isn?t better, according to most corporate interests, is the government, aka the arch nemesis of unbridled business. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Internal Revenue Service (IRS), and all the other government institutions that go by an acronym and have a role in checking the power of business have come under immense scrutiny and budget cutting pressure. Nonprofits and government agencies being pushed to become ?social entrepreneurs? by incorporating profitable business models into their services. As if it weren?t hard enough to manage a nonprofit, government agency, now they need to become successful at business too!? Watch out, public libraries might soon be charging to check out popular books or our public highways might charge extra for those that can afford to use express lanes. Oh wait, those things have already happened? While serving as the Executive Director of a nonprofit organization I had a well meaning, successful businessman on the board of directors who suggested that in order to save costs we might consider outsourcing our receptionist functions to workers in India.? The business approach has even drifted into the faith communities. Mega churches now have ?executive pastors?, who are simply glorified business administrators. Why is it that business has become the dominant sector at this point in our nation?s history?? Perhaps as Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof observed? ?when you?re rich they really think you know!??. Or maybe many have a delusional belief that they too will become a part of the one percent club? President Obama has been discredited for being a ?community organizer?, and so wouldn?t know about running the business of government. Isn?t our government supposed to be of the people, by the people, and for the people? Last time I checked corporations are not people. Governmental agencies and nonprofits deserve our admiration and support for the work they do in meeting the unmet needs of people and the environment. A healthy, civil society benefits by a respectful balance of strong government, nonprofit and business sectors.
